SouthWoods Plant Community Observation & Maintenance Log

Community or Guild: B3&2
Date: 8/22/06
Time: 7 PM
Weather: Dry

Observations : Small leaves are coming up but I'm unsure if its
PennyRoyal or Basil.
Probably Basil because Penny Royal is tiny. Fun to see them pop up
through the plethora of other plants.
Attached are examples,

The clover is overtaking the quackgrass on some of the berm.
Towering over and hopefully choking it out.
It is flourishing where it was well watered, but thin in other
spots. Another short plant with white flowers and slender leaves seems
to be a companion plant.
I need to find out what it is from Paula.

Sad to say, something ate the tiny Shag Bark Hickory. Maybe it
will survive but unlikely.
Deer have been frequenting the area, I thought they were leaving
things alone. They seem to nibble on the Buck Wheat.
Sun Flowers are towering over everything and growing fast. Maybe a
flower will get a chance to bloom, fall is coming quickly.

The Haralred Apples turning dark red. I put off picking them as
they grow and deepen in color.
One with a large crack had ants going in and out. I pulled it
cleaned out the bad parts and snacked on the rest.
These fissures must have developed early on. Some heal others
start to slowly rot.

Small minnows are in the pond. Too small to be the ones I bought
last month. They all died as far as I could tell.
These must have come through the pump as small fry. We plan on
planting the wetland plant species later this month.
Finishing off the pond is a priority before the frost.

Thanks,
'
Dan
