Slow Solutions

In June 2006 we dug this pond. In the fall I planted the design by Paula W.
It has a clay base and no liner. We wanted to have only native plants and naturalizing elements. Things take time to establish, but after three summers the pond is full of life. Fish, Turtles, Frogs and everything that they eat.

It has some leakage as water leeches to the subsoil. It has slowed but needs a trickle to top it off. I am hoping it will seal in time. All the water comes from the roof and driveway via a subsoil pipe. The overflow runs into the orchard swales.

Paula's plan at right established the submergent, emerbent and shoreline plants. Coontail (submerged plants) feed the Koi and make oxygen. i fear the Koi have eaten it all. It did not show up this summer, or is submerged out of sight.

I added structure this summer. Many rocks, logs and branches along the shore. Since there is no shade trees near the pond I have many floating rafts of twigs and bark. They seem to like hanging out underneath.

A small natural fence of branches and twigs add a great look to the pond's edge.
Eveything except the dock came from the land.
