50 Master Gardeners visit SouthWoods

Two shifts of Hennepin County master gardeners visited Southwoods for a permaculture presentation and tour. We have great discussions and defined the polycultures used to enhance plant and soil health on the property.  Many of the ecologically functional plants were in full growth and  their associations explained.

We focused on diversity and following the natural patterns of the land to catch and store water and organic material.

We looked at Comfrey, Cup Plants, Swales, Berms, and the composting worm system.

We began in the design classroom with a power point presentation about the land an resources.

Many of the fruiting shrubs are mending from a long deep winter of vole damage. The surviving Apricot and Peach trees showed the plants' resilience.

Inter planted perennials line the contour berms. Small and easily damaged Korean Nuts Pines and American Chestnuts are hidden in thick ground cover.

Nectory islands and insect habitat is abundant and in constant bloom.

2 - 4 hour tours of SouthWoods are available most weekdays and weekends.
