Rebuild Natural Capital to a Permanent Ecosystem Asset
To rebuild Natural Capital (resources
which enable the production of more resources), we need a capital investment, a
source of materials, and skill.
- Start with an abiotic soil structure
- Sand, Silt, Clay mix
- Minerals - calcium, potassium...
- Nutrients
- Add organic material
- Leaf litter (tilled into clay or top-dressed on sandy soil as mulch)
- Rotten logs and stems
- "O" horizon scrapings from a close and similar site
- Add biotic soil organisms (from the leaves, logs, and adding healthy local soil)
- Fungi
- Bacteria
- Micro-fauna
- A source of nitrogen
- Ground cover chop and drop
- Nitrogen fixing plants
- Legumes
- Trees
- Perennials
- Shrubs
- healthy soil organisms that make it bio-available.
- A source of water
- Earthworks to catch the rain run-off (swales, keyline grooves, terraces, wattle fences, berms)
- Plants that condense water in cool mornings
- Shrubs and trees that comb out water in windy rains
- Plants that cool the soil to keep evaporation low.
- Micro-drip irrigation for new plants (years1-3)
- Building gutter down spouts with lines to ponds and swales
- Ditches guided to landscape spreading
- A design and strategy (TBD)
- A plan of action (TBD)
The Ecosystem or Natural Capital is the resource that is needed for humans to survive, and be
economically active. All of which is provided by the ecosystem.
Ecosystem Assets are those parts of the natural system that are not intended
to be harvested, but create value in the ability of the system to deliver Ecosystem
Functions.
