Relinquishing the future to a new expectation and happiness.

 Deep Adaptation. By Jem Bendell

In a recent paper I read about climate change, the author talked about the need to relinquish the future.  The "future", he was referring to is the assumed or planned future we hope and work for. This is the "future" we are taught to anticipate based on past expectations, media, education, parents, and personal experience. The future we are sold and invest in.

Its hard enough to relinquishing the past and all the trials we cannot do anything about, but accept.  Then we learn and move on; hopefully to a better future having learned something.

However, if nothing in the past can help you adapt to a more extreme future, if the future is a future not seen on the planet since before human time began, what is the first course of action to accept and adapt?

The firsts step is to accept a new and ever-changing normal (or lack of a norm). This means relinquishing the expectations and assumed comfort of the present for an unforeseeable future. We need to redefine a lifestyle, our diet, our waste, and our limits to consumption. We need to accept the new resource base as being tenuous and inconsistent.

We need to stop and take a beat, a moment to think outside ourselves and define, anticipate, prepare for, and accept the worst case scenario and hope for the best. I am fortunate to a degree. I work with people in all field of industry, health, and investment. From all these people I am hearing the same, "Get ready, the dominoes are already falling".

The worn out "tip of the ice berg adage" applies here too.

If two dead whales are found on a beach of the German coast; how many were not found?
If a few sea turtles are found drowning in fishing nets, how may were never saved?
Dolphins, whales, and sea creatures of all kinds die in plastic. Thousands and millions sink to the sea floor unseen.  We've lined the seas with millions of unattended and deadly traps. Some as small as rice. Others that snare the greatest whales.

We've poisoned the air and water so vile, no ecosystem can absorb it, only the planet can respond. We had it so well, we abused it, we changed its nature.
