Getting Ready for Climate Adaptation

If we were going to run a marathon, there would be a lot of training and readiness involved. Slowly building the right muscles and perfecting the running technique, pacing, and tolerance for the body. Driver's training is practice for the ultimate behind-the-wheel test and exam to be calm when part of the driving public. SCUBA diving involves equipment that must be understood and managed well for our bodies to be in a foreign environment. It also trains you to manage your mental and physical reactions in entering, diving deeper, and decompressing when you resurface. Normal practices and laws above the surface fade away as you go deeper. Remaining calm and aware gives you options in all cases.

With each of these we start slow, calm down, build skills and awareness, and learn the new milestones for success. Old habits need to retooled or we could get injured or worse. Running with others can make the marathon more enjoyable. Defensive driving with the assumption others will follow the rules, always gives you a safe exit strategy. Problems 80 feet under water are anticipated; all divers know how to buddy-breath and can share the air to safety.

If you haven't started building the skills, tools, and expectations for contentment (or survival) within a new paradigm, now is the time, before you find yourself out paced in the coming marathon, unskilled to manage your needs or those of your family , or under water with no one to share their air with you. This is the time to enjoy learning from success and making mistakes
